Beacon Hill Park

Nature is a great teacher and walks in parks offer a variety of lessons from the magnificent teacher. The green surroundings are always soothing, and each pond tells a story of its own. Especially if they are followed by some fish that cross your way as you go over a bridge. Water lilies float on top of the water surface as if time stopped. The most important lesson I have learned from looking at nature is that we should stop every once in a while and be amazed by everything surrounding us.

The City of Victoria established Beacon Hill Park, but it is culturally significant as a burial site for the First Nations Coast Salish people, who are the original inhabitants of the Greater Victoria region. The Songhees people called the area Meeacan. The stone bridge was completed in 1889 as part of William Blair's design to encourage people to interact with the traditional flora in the area.
